Day 1 – Spend in Valletta
Valletta is the capital of Malta and there is no better place to start your journey. It stretches over peninsula with harbors on each side and is home to several significant cultural and historical landmarks in Malta. You are instantly transported into another planet.
You can start by heading to the impressive fortifications and enter through the City Gate. From there, you may explore the city’s historical streets, which include Republic Street, the major pedestrian area, and all of the little side lanes that descend to the ports. This is the place where you can enjoy the classic views of cheerful Maltese balconies.
Then make your way to St. John’s Co-Cathedral which is one of the most significant religious sites of Malta. It has strong connection to the Knights of St. John and dates back to the 16th century. The truly lavish Baroque interior here featuring elaborate paintings and gilded borders attracts most of the tourists. Moreover, the Grandmaster’s Palace is nearby and you may explore its State Rooms and Armoury which were once utilized by the Order of St. John.
If you are into history you can visit the National Museum of Archaeology to uncover the long history of the Islands. For military history you can go to Fort St. Elmo and to see how the Malt’s noble life looked simply head to Casa Rocca Piccolo.
Lastly, visit one or both of the Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens to enjoy some of the most picturesque views of the city. Along with being charming by themselves, these garden terraces offer breathtaking views of Valletta’s other famous sites, including the Grand Harbor.
Day 2 – A Relaxing 5 Days in Malta: Our Itinerary Includes 3 Cities on 2nd Day
Directly across the Valletta on Grand Harbor sits the Three Cities of Malta. From Valletta, you may take a taxi boat directly to this destination. Made up of Birgu, Cospicua and Senglea the 3 cities have traditional architecture and landmarks and are less crowded.
You can begin your trip at Senglea that features lovely towers and breathtaking views. Take a walk through the charming streets of Senglea and arrive at the magnificent Senglea Basilica. As you exit the city, you’ll go through the St. Michael Bastion main gate, which is part of the fortress that guards this end of the city.
You’ll soon arrive in Cospicua, next of Three Cities, as you follow the waterfront. Cospicua, the most residential of the three has few tourist attractions apart from the stunning St. Helen’s Gate and the recently renovated docks.
The oldest of the 3 Cities, Birgu, is last but certainly not the least. Visit the Maritime Museum to learn about Malta’s illustrious naval heritage. After that, proceed to see the famous Inquisitor’s Palace in the heart of this medieval city. Until you arrive at Fort Saint Angelo, roam around the city’s charming but quiet back lanes. In addition to enjoying more views of Valletta and the Three Cities, you may learn about all the civilizations that have shaped Malta’s history here.
Day 3 – Gozo & Comino
So, people it’s now time to head to Gozo. It’s best to plan Malta in 5 days with day trips to Sicily and Gozo. You can explore Comino later in the day. Gozo and Comino allows you to see the very different side of Malta.
Gozo has a far more rustic and rural environment. As soon as you arrive to Mgarr Harbor, you will be greeted by a charming small village and the Lourdes Chapel standing high above. Half of your day is far too less to see everything in Gozo, most visitors focus on Victoria which is the island’s capital.
You can start by visiting Independence Square in Victoria to get the reel feel of this old-fashioned town, then head to the huge Citadel of the city. Here you will not only enjoy the stunning views but will find several grand museums including the Museum of Archaeology. Before you leave take out some time to walk around the narrow streets of Victoria full of traditional houses.
Ġgantija temple is the yet another must-see attraction in Gozo. You will be in aww of the huge stone blocks used during its construction.
After Gozo its time to explore Comino which is a wildlife reserve with vacant and rocky landscapes. The region is highly popular for its swimming sights including the blue lagoon which is most popular by far. In order to get the magnificent coastal views you can either ride a cycle or walk along the Santa Marija Tower.
Day 4 – Must be in Mdina
Mdina is my most favorite out of all the places we explored in Malta. One of our friends had suggested to visit this place I am definitely not disappointed. If you have followed Games of Thrones, you’ll recognize Mdina very well as a lot of scenes are being filmed here. The city’s architecture is simply gorgeous. You can easily walk around the city as it is quite small.
Must see attractions here include Mdina Gate- you’ll probably see this gate even before entering the town. You will be mesmerized by the handsome views of buggies and horses passing through the gate. Secondly St. Paul’s Cathedral, a beautiful church dedicated to St. Paul Apostle.
Furthermore, you can also simply walk around this small city enjoy the outstanding views. And finally, after the long day of and it being the 4th out of 5 days in Malta, if you really wanna enjoy some delicious meal and beer, you must absolutely dine at De Mondion. Their rooftop sitting is spectacular and food is really tasty.
Day 5 – Popeye Village
Your holidays will definitely be incomplete without visiting the water park. There is no better way to end your trip then to dive in the water and mark an end to your 5 days in Malta trip. You will find a lot of slides here, a huge wave pool to simply relax, splash and have fun. The natural sights here are also abundant and you will instantly fall in love with it.
